In these tough economic times, increasing numbers of charities are starting social ventures to generate revenue to support their missions. Social entrepreneurship is an excellent way to diversify revenue sources and decrease reliance on contributions, but there are serious potential risks. A social enterprise that is unrelated to your organizations charitable purpose will generate unrelated business taxable income and could jeopardize its tax-exempt status.

During this workshop we will:
- Discuss and define social enterprise, social venture, social entrepreneurship
- Review the risks and benefits, related legal and tax issues like unrelated business income tax
- Teach how to evaluate and structure a social enterprise
- Apply concepts to two case studies
